the delegates in hand before tampa. >> the beginning of the end says mark halperin. michael steele, you once said that mitt romney, the brother just can't bake the cake. it looks like the oven may be hot enough for romney. let's look at the winner board. romney at 47% of the vote in illinois. rick santorum at 35%. ron paul at 9% is, gingrich at 8%. more staggering i guess is the delegate total romney at 485, santorum at 193, gingrich at 137, paul at 34. what do you make of it? >> i agree with park. he's clearly and always been kind of the guy to beat and been out there, but it doesn't mean you're not going to have tensions going into this convention that i still don't believe he'll have 1144 when he gets to tampa. he'll have to negotiate that. i don't see how he wins 50 plus percent of the delegates. he got 47 here in illinois, which was tailor-made for him. illinois's a state where he should have had 52, 53% of the vote in which case that -- when you hit that threshold, you get all the dels under the rules. if you're still winning the way he's winning, it's all proportional. tell me where y

steele. michael, romney's line to his donors in new york city went something like this. it's going to be a long road, but we're winning the most delegates and we're going to be the nominee. kind of like what he said in an interview yesterday. >> right. >> by the way, last night i got more delegates than anybody else. so this is a process of becoming the nominee. we're pursuing that. some who are very conservative may not yet be in my camp, but they will be when i become the normal anemia and face barack obama. >> is that the right message? >> it is. they want to know, you know, how sure are you about the footing you have ragt now? how are you doing in your delegate count? what's your burn rate so far? how much are you taking in? >> did you take that at all to say to those other people to mean the conservatives who have supported rick santorum or newt gingrich, you're not going to have a choice. you're going to have to come over to me in november. >> keep in mind, he's talking to people who are supporting him, so that's a different conversation than the one you're going to have when

and michael steele is chairman of the republican national party and an msnbc political analyst. let's see how long we agree. there are several possible outcomes. there's two states. how many outcomes can there be from the votes tonight in mississippi and alabama. first, let's say santorum wins both tonight. if that happens, that means newt gets blown out of the race, i think. and santorum secures the position of clearly number-one challenger to mitt romney. let's stop. here's another possibility. gingrich could win both tonight. he's from that area. he's from georgia. that could hit santorum, which helps romney. it keeps him in the race. third, you could have a gingrich/santorum split tonight. each one winning a state. if that happens, no big changes. finally, romney could take one of the states, say mississippi. that's big for romney because if he wins mississippi and newt wins alabama, that's very bad for santorum and very good for romney. that's my view. let's go through your thinking. >> i agree with that. >> all that? >> i agree those are the basic four scenarios. i guess i agree with th

will hear from michael steele. >> we are joined by students from fairfax, va., and the washington center here in washington, d.c., and joining us is michael steele, the former chairman of the committee. great to have you with us. there are a couple of story lines that could come out. what are they? >> there are more than a couple. you have the mitt romney it which is winning big in places like ohio and winning one of the southern states to release solidify the argument he is a player to go -- to solidify the argument he is the player. the base has begun to gel around winning in the south for example, so he has a great opportunity to bring closure to the process of throwing of someone like rick santorum, his story line is going to be, -- to the process. for someone like rick santorum, his story line is going to be continuing the story line, winning ohio, which he -- if he does the resets of thing. the base will have an opportunity to say, maybe we should look closer of someone like santorum going forward. and you have georgia and the newt gingrich story line, witches region which is makin

are the first three we will hear from. bring in the former chairman of the republican party, michael steel. nice to see you, mr. chairman. >> hey, rachel, what's up? >> i saw you mixing it up with joan walsh about the politics of the rush limbaugh comments about sandra fluke, the nature of his apology, mitt romney's inability to say woe do anything other than use different language there you seem to think this is sometime a real fight about contraception that's worth having between the parties. do you think that this is what republicans and democrats ought to be fighting for, putting republicans in a good stead heading to november? >> no, i don't. that is exactly the point. i think all of this could have been nipped in the bud early, early on for the leadership of the party, particularly those candidates running for president, to -- you know, without hesitation just rebuke the profanity of the comments. to make it clear this is not a reflection of who we are as conservatives what we stand for as a broadly based republican party and i thought again, one of those missed opportunity for the leaders

a brokered convention. when you hear that, what do you think? that's michael steel who used to be the chairman obviously. >> i like michael steel. >> oh, no. whenever someone starts, i like -- i'm going to write that down as one of my phrases, i like. >> bless his heart, i hope you don't buzz me on this. >> you know what that means, chip. >> we know what's coming. this is not good for the party, to go through a brokered convention. i don't think that's what chairman steel's goal was. i think it was make the process a little longer. the last 20 years the nomination's been over in one or two or three states. now we have this very long process but usually we would be good. then we added super pacs to it so no longer do you win states to get momentum to stay in the race. now you just get one or two contributors to write really big checks and you can stay in the whole way and ultimately that may not be good for our nominee. now mitt romney is using it if he's the nominee to his advantage. senator santorum has used this time to his advantage to build a great organization that a lo

convention. michael steele said that himself. we are going to sit back and watch the drama. >> you make it a fight to sunday morning. thank you both. >> there are new fears that the rising price of gas could pose a serious threat to the recovery of the u.s. economy. the average national gas price is energy $4 a gallon and some economists say it could hit $5 and cause an immediate downturn. brenda buttner is here. >> hi. >> it impacts what you pay to transport the goods and that raises the price of the goods. so how severe is the impact? >> we have been luck thetime, as opposed to between the 08, there are a couple of thairngs different. number 1, some energy sources have been going down. we have seen natural gas falling. so consumers haven't been hit as hard by the rising price of gas. and they have been saving more as unemployment has been going down a bit. but we are right at a tipping point. >> you hit a key point. that's hiring from small businesses. some surveys are showing that small businesses are getting hit and they are about to start rising prices prices and they're about -- t
